Here's some basic information on options for staking trees. This will depend largely on tree shape and size in addition to how exposed the site is.

Large trees will require two posts to support them with a

D-rail cross member.

Multi stem trees will require three posts

Small and medium sizes trees will only require a single post or stake.Small trees can also be staked at an angle. This is also useful on conifers where branches obstruct placement of post.
